The use of heavy duty LDPE film as an underlay in conjugation with tile, brick, concrete or clay prevents total seepage losses.The use of LDPE film underneath the tile or concrete lining would prevent the leakage of water through cracks.It further helps in better curing of the concrete lining.

Lining with Polythene Film-Plastics reduces lining cost appreciably and is a very effective water barrier material.For obtaining best use out of them, it is better to understand their strength and weakness.
Method of lining canals with LDPE films-In canal system, the discharge rate and the velocity of flow plays an important role in determining the type of lining which can be used. On this basis following methods have been devloped.
(A) LDPE film lining in bed and sides , overlaid with single dry tile pitching.
(B) LDPE film lining in bed and sides , overlaid with single tile in cement mortar.
(C) LDPE film lining in bed and sides with soil overlay in bed and single tile lining in cement mortar in the sides.
(D) LDPE film lining in bed overlaid with single single tile in cement mortar and double tile lining in the sides.
(E) LDPE film lining in bed overlaid with soil cover and double the lining in the sides.
(F) LDPE film lining both in bed and sides overlaid with soil cover.
Joint of LDPE film-the heat sealing is done by an electric iron having three parellal soiling bars. After sealing the joints are tested for leaks.
Advantages-Experiments proove LDPE to be the best among PVC, LDPE and butyl-coated fabrics. PVC cannot be manufactured in wide width and is less stable. PVC film on weight basis is very expensive. So irrigation departments in some states are already using LDPE for lining at field level. 2.5% carbon black is added to Ldpe to safeguard it against UV-rays.

Irrigation-lining of canals, distributaries, watercourses to stop seepage losses.
Fishries-lining of fish ponds/Reservoirs.
Civil construction works-Water proofing/Damp proofing of all types of roofs, flooring and underground Structures. Construction site dwellings / Material storage tents.
Defence-Underlay for runways, Tents, Ammunition dumps, Tarpaulin and bunker linings.
Food stuffs-Milk pouches, food stuff and confectionary packaging.
